Someone writes to you on a dating site. You reply, and then they disappear. Sometimes it happens after a WhatsApp exchange or a first conversation. It can be frustrating, especially when it happens more than once.
People sometimes withdraw because they feel uncomfortable and would rather avoid an awkward conversation. A profile on a screen can make it easy to forget that there is a person behind it: someone with feelings, who is waiting for an answer.
By trying to spare ourselves an uncomfortable moment, we can leave someone else feeling dismissed or rejected. A short, respectful message is enough: “I’ve thought about it, and I don’t think we’re the right match. I wish you well.” You do not need to continue a connection that is not right for you, but you can bring it to a considerate close.
A relationship asks us to stay present when something is difficult. That starts with small acts of honesty and respect, including towards someone we do not want to date. Silence may seem easier from our side of the screen; from the other side, it can hurt.
As for the person who disappeared on you: their response tells you something about how they handle communication. It does not measure your worth. You are looking for a relationship in which people can speak to each other openly and respectfully.
It is natural to feel disappointed. Give that feeling room, then remind yourself what you need from a partner. Someone else’s silence does not have to take away your confidence.
