I want to move forward, but her replies feel distant

12 September 2024

At the beginning of a relationship, there is a great deal we do not yet know. We are deciding whether to open our hearts, whether the other person feels the same, and whether this connection is right for us. It can be an uncertain and vulnerable time.

Perhaps you want to meet more often and she is busy. Perhaps you send a message and wait longer than you expected for a reply. One meeting may feel promising, while the next leaves you unsure.

It is tempting to fill in the gaps with guesses. Often, we imagine the least encouraging explanation. Ending the connection can feel like a way to protect ourselves from rejection before we have had to ask a difficult question.

But different people move at different speeds. The other person may need time to think, to get used to the connection, or to understand what they want. A delayed message alone does not tell you the whole story.

Try an honest, considerate conversation. Say what you have noticed, share what you would like, and listen to how she sees the relationship. Giving the connection a little room can help you practise communication and make a more considered decision.

People have told me that they were unsure at first, stayed a little longer, and discovered a relationship that suited them. That does not mean every connection should continue. It means it is worth understanding what is happening before ending something that may be good. If you are unsure, speak with someone whose judgment you trust.
